Preparing to import goods into the UK
Start with accurate cargo information, documents and clear responsibilities.
Confirm the destination and importer
The UK government sets out different processes for Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Commercial imports to England, Scotland or Wales generally require a GB EORI; Northern Ireland may involve XI EORI and different rules. Check personal postal shipments separately from business imports.
Prepare cargo and declaration information
Prepare the commercial invoice, packing information, accurate descriptions, materials and use, quantities, actual values, currency, origin and consignee details. Confirm commodity codes for commercial imports. Controlled goods may need licences, certificates or compliance documentation.
Agree customs and tax responsibilities
Duty and import VAT depend on the goods, value, transaction and import arrangements. Confirm the importer, declaration responsibility, tax payer and included destination charges. Door-to-door delivery does not automatically include taxes. Refer to current GOV.UK guidance and a shipment-specific review.
