LABEL & BARCODE REFERENCE

Royal Mail label reader

Choose a barcode image or paste label text to check postal references and compare label details with your booking.

Your image and text stay in this browser. The tool does not save them or send them to a server.

Read a barcode from an image

PNG, JPEG or WebP · up to 8 MiB. Use a clear image of one complete barcode with its blank border.

Supported formats and limits

Reads Code 128, Data Matrix, QR, Aztec and PDF417. One barcode per image. Mailmark 4-state and RM4SCC are not supported; the contents of some 2D barcodes cannot be interpreted.

Maximum 24 megapixels and 12,000 pixels per edge. Large images are reduced to 2,048 pixels on the longest edge. The reader extracts barcode data; it does not read printed names, addresses or service words.

Check label text

Paste an S10 reference, printed service name or readable scanner text. Remove names, street addresses and account details first. Maximum 4,096 characters.

Copy only the recipient postcode you can see. We check common UK postcode syntax; we cannot verify that it exists, identifies the recipient or matches a barcode.

The example is for learning only. It is not a live tracking reference or a postage label.

Read the label field by field

The layout varies by product and printing channel. Select a field to read what is visible, what may be encoded and what needs a separate check.

Read the complete name, such as Tracked 24, and any printed signature option.
Machine data / reference
A product word is readable evidence. An arbitrary prefix or routing mark is not a reliable product lookup.

A similar appearance does not make barcode formats interchangeable. Identify the documented format before applying a decoder.

Royal Mail 2D

Royal Mail parcel 2D labels come from shipping systems. The existence of a 2D code alone does not establish a fully tracked service. Use the item reference and booked product together.

CBC / RM4SCC

Historical CBC/RM4SCC references describe a postcode, Delivery Point Suffix and check character. This tool does not read bar states or validate that legacy check character. The historical guide is not current posting eligibility.

QR

A QR code supplied for printing a label is a printing credential. Royal Mail’s eligible printing locations and products are defined in the booking instructions. Use the printed item reference for parcel tracking.
